What's on at The Citizens Theatre

Venue Intro:

One of the leading theatres in Britain, the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre Company was formed in 1943 by a group of Glasgow Citizens including the playwright James Bridie, who became the first President, Dr Tom Honeyman, who became the first Chairman, and the writer Guy McCrone who was the first Managing Director. They first presented their repertoire in the Athenaeum Theatre but moved to the Royal Princess's Theatre (originally opened in 1878 and famous for pantomime, melodrama and the national drama) in the Gorbals in 1945. This building was later renamed the Citizens' Theatre.

Disability Info:

  • Wheelchair Access
We have level access to the Main Theatre and to the Stalls Studio as well as wheelchair-friendly lift access to the Circle Studio. When booking your tickets please inform our box office if you require a wheelchair space. There are also handrails throughout most of the theatre as well as a ramp (on the right hand side as you come through theatre entrance) in the foyer. Please bear in mind that we have replaced the heavy glass doors with a two-speed revolving door. There is a button at waist height on the right hand side on the door that slows it down if you find this more comfortable. There is a long handle on the revolving door just above waist height and the door goes around anti-clockwise. There are also rubber pads at the bottom of the door. If your foot hits these pads the door stops – this is a safety measure to help people control their access through the entrance.
  • WC
In the foyer we have a specially adapted toilet at ground level. This is down a short corridor to the right hand side of the Main Theatre - beside the lift.
  • Audio Description
There is an Audio Described Performance in our Main Theatre for every Citizens’ Theatre Company production on the last Thursday of the run. An infrared system allows visually impaired patrons to hear a commentary through a personal headset, given out before the performance. The commentary begins 15 minutes before each Audio Described show. Please let the box office know when booking if you intend to use the audio described commentary. For details of audio described shows this season please call our box office on 0141 429 0022. This information is also available in a taped format.
  • Induction Loop
There is an induction loop in the Stalls of the Main Theatre. To tune in to the loop, please turn your hearing aid to the ‘T’ position.
  • Guide dogs
Guide dogs are welcome in all three Citizens’ Theatre venues.
