Description:
John McBarron was born in 1928 into a family that fared no better than others in the poverty-stricken East End of Glasgow. He left school at the age of 14 and joined his father in the family grocery store (the wee shop) just down from Celtic Park. At barely 17 he became seriously frustrated with his limited life and with a hunger to improve his limited education he developed a passion for reading. In his mid-twenties he chose to forego the opportunity to join Glasgow University on the grounds of his father’s illness requiring family support in the shop. At the age of 32 he went to London to explore its cosmopolitan culture and whether his thoughts on becoming a writer had any merit. Some 25 years later he took early retirement from the Gillette Company, Boston, as a Senior International Consultant. He now lives happily in Glasgow not far removed from Celtic Park.
