About the town of Peebles in Scotland
The local motto "Peebles for Pleasure" is borne out by the town's attractive setting amongst the hills on the banks of the River Tweed. The wide spacious High Street has an old Mercat Cross and the ruined Cross Kirk, standing high above Eddleston Water, was founded in 1261. The Chambers Institute features the Tweeddale Museum and Gallery. Golf, fishing, mountain biking and walking are popular pursuits, with the Forest of Tweeddale and the challenging Southern Upland Way within easy reach. In the summer Peebles events calendar includes the Beltane Week, Agricultural Show, Arts Festival and Highland Games.
Experience Peebles though the ages, call in at the tourist information centre for a free copy of a historic town trail, and view Peebles by foot. The 90 mile long Tweed Cycleway starts in Biggar and is a way-marked cycle route running through the heart of the Borders finishing on the coast at Berwick-upon-Tweed.
High on a rocky outcrop above the River Tweed stands Neidpath Castle and just a short drive away are Kailzie Gardens and Dawyck Botanic Gardens, particularly stunning in autumn.
To the east surrounded by the scenic hills and forest of Tweed Valley lies Innerleithen, where St. Ronan's Well Interpretative Centre depicts the era of the last century when the town was famed as a spa. Robert Smail's Printing Works give a fascinating insight into the printing processes of the past.
